WashBar began when our founder, Jules Smith, was asked to create a bar of soap to help a friend’s dog with skin allergies. When Jules realised what a difference that first bar made for Millie and her owner, she looked into who else she could help. She found loads of products made with nasty chemicals and synthetic fragrances and a lack of genuinely natural products for dogs and horses. The need was huge so WashBar was born.
From that day, the business has grown. We are now found in stores all across NZ as well as a growing global market.
From a single bar of soap, WashBar now has a range of products, all researched and developed in-house and manufactured in state of the art facilities in New Zealand. In addition to our current range, we have several ground-breaking products in development.
Please meet our core team based in our Whangarei HQ:
Founder and Top Dog. Jules started it all with a bar of soap, but these days she leaves the soap making to others and does all the big picture, big business, ’big-girl pants’ stuff that keeps this dog & pony show on the road. She does some of the new product development and keeps the team all pulling the sled in the same direction.
Jules loves to garden and tries to sneak in a few hours of quilting whenever she can.
Pete is the huntaway - we send him away and he rounds up new business. Point, fetch, good dog. He’s our Export Development Director and the guy to ask about all the hairy details. He often packs his saddle bags and heads off into the wild blue yonder spreading the word about WashBar. Sometimes he’s talking horses in Hamilton, sometimes he’s eating dumplings in Taiwan. He was the first official full-time WashBar employee (and is married to the boss). When he’s got some down time he’s a rather creative type, whipping up artwork for the office, or repairing fences on the farm.
A mad keen gardener who is in charge of WashBar's ongoing planting of trees to offset emissions project. Mary still manages to fit time into her busy day to head up the warehouse. She also feeds and waters the WashBar team including Monday the gorgeous WashBar spokesdog. Her gumboots are often found by the office front door.
Official WashBar spokesdog. When she’s not in the office doing a terrible impersonation of a guard dog, Monday spends her days lounging around Jules & Pete’s place, keeping an eye on the cats, relieving them of the occasional rabbit they've caught and ‘assisting’ Mary with the gardening.
We get loads of feedback from pet owners telling us how much they enjoy using our products and about the great results they get (which we love by the way). But it's also good to get feedback on how we're performing as a business.
Getting peer recognition and help with identifying areas for improvement is invaluable. And a little recognition goes a long way in encouraging us that we're getting it right.
